Algerian defender Mitchell Weiser is making headlines with his impressive performances for Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga, placing him in direct competition with Moroccan star Achraf Hakimi for the title of the most impactful defender in Europe’s top five leagues.
The 30-year-old, who recently switched his football nationality from German to Algerian, has showcased his attacking prowess, contributing to five goals (scoring and assisting) in just 11 Bundesliga appearances this season.
Weiser and fellow Algerian Rayan Aït-Nouri are now tied for fourth position among the most productive defenders in Europe's top divisions. Meanwhile, with six goal contributions for Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1, Achraf Hakimi sits in third place. Nuno Tavares, a Portuguese sensation who has made eight contributions for Lazio in Serie A, is at the top of the table.
Weiser’s international debut for Algeria is anticipated during the March international break, as the Desert Foxes face Botswana and Mozambique in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. With his ability to play multiple roles—right-back, midfielder, or playmaker—Weiser is set to challenge teammates Mohamed Fares and Youcef Atal for a starting spot in Algeria’s lineup.
