Vladimir Petković, the coach of Algeria's national team, may have harmed his prospects of luring Lyon's young, gifted player Rayan Cherki to the Desert Foxes. In order to bolster their squad for upcoming tournaments, the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has made Cherki and Monaco's Maghnes Akliouche a high priority.

According to La Gazette du Fennec, Petković missed a key chance to meet Cherki towards the end of last season. FAF had reportedly arranged for Cherki’s father to set up a meeting where the coach would explain his plans for the team. The timing was perfect because Cherki was having a tough time at Lyon and was even listed for sale, making him open to considering other options, including playing for Algeria instead of France.

But Petković postponed the meeting due to other important tasks, unintentionally delaying Algeria’s offer. Since then, Cherki has performed admirably at Lyon, prompting the French media to advocate for his inclusion in Les Bleus, the French national team.

Now that things are more difficult, Algeria will have a harder time persuading Cherki to wear their colors as his reputation grows both at home and abroad.
