Mauritania secured their spot in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) after holding Mali to a 0-0 draw in a fierce match played in Bamako. Together with their 1-0 victory in the first leg in Nouakchott, this outcome eliminated Mali from the competition.
Mali controlled most of the game and had many opportunities to score, but they couldn’t finish their chances. Mauritania’s goalkeeper, Babacar Diop, was outstanding, making key saves to keep the game scoreless. Mauritania’s strong and well-organized defense made it impossible for Mali to find a way through.
Mauritania's increasing status in African football is further cemented with their fourth CHAN qualifying. After missing out on the tournament, Mali, a consistent powerhouse, must now undergo a period of reflection and reconstruction.
Mauritania’s achievement underscores their resilience and tactical discipline, while Mali’s absence from CHAN 2024 will be a significant loss for the competition.
