Manchester City star's new business venture: Haaland invests in chess
Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has become one of the investors in a new chess initiative — the Total Chess World Championship Tour, aimed at boosting the sport’s popularity among a wider audience, reports The Sun.
The 25-year-old Norwegian, renowned for his passion for chess, has backed a project designed to turn the intellectual game into a more spectacular and mainstream event. It is expected that his compatriot, grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, will also take part in the tournament.
Haaland noted that chess and football share much in common. According to him, both disciplines require quick thinking, intuition, and the ability to anticipate several moves ahead.
As part of the deal, the forward, together with investor Morten Borg, has established the company Chess Mates, which will own Norway Chess — one of the key organizers of the new tour. The project is set to kick off in the second half of 2026.
