Man United legend Roy Keane admits he cried after leaving the club
Manchester United icon Roy Keane has revealed on the Stick to Football podcast that his departure from the club in November 2005 was an emotional moment for him. His exit followed a controversial interview on MUTV after United’s 4-1 defeat to Middlesbrough.
In that interview, Keane openly criticized his teammates, calling out specific players he believed were responsible for the loss. Though the interview never aired, it led to a heated fallout with Sir Alex Ferguson, during which Keane told the manager that the team needed more from him.
As a result, he was forced to leave the club under dramatic circumstances. Keane admitted that while he initially felt a sense of relief after the dispute, the reality of the situation eventually hit him hard.
“When I left United, I did cry that morning. Cried in my car,” the Irishman admitted.
Despite his emotional farewell, Keane also stated that he doesn’t feel a deep connection to the club where he spent 12 years and captained the team. He explained that he doesn’t support any of his former teams, watching their matches purely from a professional perspective rather than as a fan.
