Mamelodi Sundowns Appoint Miguel Cardoso Amid CAF Champions League Struggles
Miguel Cardoso, a Portuguese coach, has been formally appointed as Mamelodi Sundowns' new head coach, succeeding Manqoba Mngqithi. The 52-year-old will now lead the South African champions, according to the announcement made on Tuesday.
Having led well-known teams like Shakhtar Donetsk, Rio Ave, Nantes, and AEK Athens in the past, Cardoso has a plethora of experience. Last season, he famously guided Esperance de Tunis to the CAF Champions League final before losing to Al Ahly by a slim margin of 1-0.
Sundowns have struggled in the current CAF Champions League campaign, drawing both their group stage matches. They were held goalless at home by Maniema Union of DR Congo and secured a 1-1 draw away against Moroccan giants AS FAR Rabat.
In an attempt to regain their supremacy on the continental scene, the team is hoping that Cardoso's leadership would revitalize their season.
