Major retraction in the British press. The Times apologizes to FIFA president
The respected British newspaper The Times published an official retraction and publicly apologized to FIFA and its president, Gianni Infantino, for publishing false information.
Details: The editorial board admitted that previously reported claims about hidden payments to the head of world football's governing body were completely unfounded.
“We reported that Gianni Infantino received a second salary from Fifa. This is incorrect. There was no second salary. We also accept that Mr Infantino did not purchase a property in Miami at a suspiciously undervalued price, as we reported,” the publication said in an official statement.
Journalists moved quickly to settle the legal dispute, fully retracting the allegations they had published.
“We are happy to make these corrections and apologise to Mr Infantino and Fifa for the errors,” The Times concluded, officially clearing the official of suspicions of financial misconduct and purchasing luxury property at a reduced price.
It is worth noting that Gianni Infantino has headed world football's governing body since February 2016 and has repeatedly come under close scrutiny from European investigators. The authoritative British newspaper's public admission of its mistakes marked a rare precedent, strengthening the Swiss official's reputation amid ongoing political battles in world football.
