Bundesliga club Mainz 05 terminated their contract with winger Anwar El Ghazi due to his outspoken support for Palestine amid the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. El Ghazi publicly expressed his support for Palestine after the outbreak of the conflict between Israel and the Gaza Strip, which led to his exclusion from the team. His continued statements in support of Palestine ultimately led to Mainz prematurely ending his contract.

"Fight for what you believe is right, even if it means standing alone," El Ghazi responded with this quote to the contract termination.

Anwar El Ghazi is a Dutch footballer of Moroccan descent. He began his career at Ajax, where he spent four years before moving to France in 2016, playing for Lille. Two years later, he joined English football, spending six seasons with Aston Villa and one year with Everton. After his time in the Premier League, he returned to the Netherlands and played for PSV for two years. In September of the current year, he joined Mainz as a free agent. El Ghazi made only three appearances for Mainz and contributed with one assist.

Among his achievements, he holds a Dutch championship and a Dutch Cup title with PSV.
