Mainz terminated Anwar El Ghazi’s contract in 2023, prompting the player to take legal action against the German club — and now the court’s decision has been made.

Details: In November 2023, El Ghazi published a social media post regarding the war between Israel and Gaza. He was initially suspended from training for making pro-Palestinian comments.

However, after later stating that he did not “regret” his remarks, Mainz decided to terminate his contract.

El Ghazi took the matter to court and ultimately won. Mainz lost their appeal and must now pay €1.5 million in compensation for unlawful dismissal.

Reminder: FIFA president Gianni Infantino, the 55-year-old Swiss official, recently shared his views on the ongoing Israel-Palestine situation, which continues to affect global football.
