It has been over a week since the passing of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota. The Merseyside club continues to pay tribute to their departed icon.
Details: The number 20 jersey, which Jota wore during his time at Liverpool, has now been permanently retired and will forever be associated with the Portuguese striker. According to the club, this decision was made after consultations with the late player's family.
Quote: "As a club, we were acutely aware of the feelings of our supporters—and we felt exactly the same way. It was absolutely vital for us to involve Diogo's wife, Ruth, and his family in this process and to ensure they were the first to learn of our intentions. I believe this is the first time in Liverpool’s history that such an honor has been given to an individual.
So, you can say this is a unique tribute to a unique person. By retiring this number, we make it eternal—and, therefore, never forgotten. Diogo joined us in 2020, he brought us number 20 and wore it—with pride, respect, and warmth. For Liverpool, he will always be our number 20," Liverpool’s official website quotes Michael Edwards, FSG’s Director of Football.
