During yesterday’s eighth round of Ligue 1, Paris Saint-Germain hosted Strasbourg in a match that ended with a commanding victory for the home side. However, the league has opened an investigation against PSG due to homophobic chants from their supporters.

Details: Throughout the match, PSG fans behaved inappropriately, shouting offensive slurs from the stands. Notably, these chants were not directed at Strasbourg players but were aimed at Marseille and their midfielder Adrien Rabiot, The Guardian reports.

Next week, PSG will face their archrival, Marseille, and it appears the fans began their taunts early. Another possible motivation behind this behavior is the upcoming ban preventing PSG supporters from attending the next away game.

While the chants echoed around the stadium, the announcer at Parc des Princes made two pleas for the behavior to stop, only to be met with mockery. Ligue 1 has announced that its disciplinary committee will review the evidence.

Quote: “These latest discriminatory chants from Paris Saint-Germain supporters are unacceptable at a time when professional football as a whole is working towards banning homophobic behavior and chants in stadiums,” the league stated.

Reminder: Last season, several PSG players received suspended one-match bans from the league’s disciplinary committee for offensive chants directed at Marseille following a home league win. Ousmane Dembélé, Achraf Hakimi, Randal Kolo Muani, and Layvin Kurzawa were caught on video participating in the celebrations, but later apologized.

Yesterday’s match was also marred by homophobic chants from a section of PSG fans targeting Marseille players. As a result, the league has ordered the closure of the Auteuil stand, located behind one of the goals, for two matches.

Additionally, PSG fans are banned from attending next Sunday’s game against Marseille for security reasons, as previous clashes have occurred between the two fanbases.
