Leicester City face the prospect of starting next season in the Championship with a hefty penalty. The club, which dropped to the second tier after a disappointing Premier League campaign, now risks being sanctioned for breaching financial regulations.
According to The Independent, the sanctions are linked to overspending by more than £17 million over a three-year period from 2021 to 2024. The unique aspect of Leicester’s case is that the Foxes competed in both the Premier League and the EFL during this span, meaning they were subject to the regulations of both governing bodies.
EFL rules dictate an automatic 12-point deduction for exceeding financial limits, especially when the breach surpasses £15 million. Given the scale of the alleged violations, Leicester have little hope of a reduced penalty, even if they appeal.
On top of this, Leicester could also face further punishment from the Premier League for late submission of financial statements and insufficient cooperation during the investigation.
