Legendary Marcelo wins 31st career trophy
In South America, the Recopa Sudamericana match took place overnight. This competition is the equivalent of the UEFA Super Cup in Europe, where the winner of the Copa Libertadores faces off against the winner of the Copa Sudamericana.
This year, the contenders for the trophy were the Brazilian team Fluminense, the victors of the Copa Libertadores, against the Ecuadorian club LDU Quito, holders of the Copa Sudamericana.
In the end, Fluminense emerged victorious with a 2-0 win, courtesy of a brace from Colombian forward John Arias. This triumph marks the first time in the club's history that they have secured the Recopa Sudamericana.
In the 67th minute, the legendary Brazilian left-back Marcelo came off the bench for Fluminense. This trophy now adds to his impressive collection, making it the 31st in his professional career.
The draw for the Copa Libertadores 2024 will take place on March 18, with the first-round group stage matches scheduled for April 2-4.
