Legal bombshell! Lille weigh unprecedented lawsuit over Santos ACL as Le Havre hit back
Lille are weighing up unprecedented legal action after defender Tiago Santos suffered a season-ending knee injury in Saturday's 1-0 win over Le Havre — and the club is furious that the challenge went completely unpunished.
Details: The club confirmed on Monday that the 24-year-old right-back ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, with an associated meniscus tear, following what Lille described as an 'uncontrolled and dangerous' tackle from behind by Le Havre midfielder Amir Richardson. Crucially, referee Bastien Dechepy and the VAR team saw no reason to penalise the challenge — not even with a caution.
Lille's statement pulled no punches. The club pointed out that the tackle was visible in real time, captured by multiple cameras, and shown in slow motion, yet no sanction was forthcoming despite VAR's remit to intervene for a possible direct red card. The club also highlighted a second very aggressive challenge by the same player on Dilane Bakwa minutes later that likewise went unpunished, and asked the French federation and the professional league for a full explanation of both the on-field call and the video review.
Officially, Lille have filed the matter with the FFF and LFP, asked the league president to refer the incident to the disciplinary committee, and reserved the right to take legal action to obtain compensation for what it calls 'considerable sporting and financial damage'. They also pledged to support Santos in any steps he takes to defend his own rights.
Le Havre wasted no time in defending their player. In an official response, the club and Richardson expressed 'sincere and total support' for Santos and wished him a speedy recovery, while questioning why a retrospective sanction would even be considered given that neither the referee nor the VAR judged the challenge worthy of a booking — a position that will do little to calm the storm in Lille. The timing is brutal for Davide Ancelotti's side, who visit Arsenal in the Champions League on Tuesday having also lost Ethan Mbappé in the same week.
It's worth noting that this is the second ACL injury of Santos' career — he damaged his left knee in October 2024 and spent over a year on the sidelines — making Lille's determination to see accountability for the challenge all the more understandable.
Reminder: Another scandal surrounding Infantino: FIFA chief's secret millions come to light.
