Today, on May 26th, in London, the Championship playoff final took place, where Leeds United suffered a 0-1 defeat to Southampton, conceding the spot in the English Premier League to the 'Saints'.

In the just-ended season, Leeds finished third in the Championship table, gathering 90 points from 46 matches. This wasn't enough for direct promotion to the top flight, as Leicester and Ipswich accumulated more points.

As reported by Squawka, Leeds became the first team since the 1997/98 season to amass at least 90 points but fail to secure promotion to the Premier League. Sunderland had faced a similar situation before.

Thus, Southampton joined Leicester and Ipswich in securing promotion to the Premier League after the regular season. These three teams will replace Luton Town, Burnley, and Sheffield United in the top flight.
