Leading golfer Rory McIlroy plans to play fewer tournaments in the upcoming season
Last weekend, the FedEx Cup playoffs concluded with Scottie Scheffler emerging as the champion. Rory McIlroy, a three-time winner of the FedEx Cup, finished this year’s competition in ninth place.
Following the TOUR Championship, the Northern Irishman announced his intention to reduce the number of tournaments he plays next season. The 35-year-old golfer plans to limit his schedule to 18-20 tournaments per year. By the end of 2024, McIlroy is expected to have played nearly 30 tournaments, the majority on the PGA Tour.
"I usually play around 22 tournaments. But that was when I was 20, and I didn't have the responsibilities I have now. I think moving forward, I'll try to cut down to 18 or 20 tournaments a year," McIlroy stated.
This season, McIlroy participated in 14 PGA tournaments (including regular season events, Signature Events, and the FedEx Cup playoffs), four majors, two DP World Tour events, and the Olympic Games, totaling 21 tournaments.
He added that he aims to play five more by the end of the year, bringing his total to 26 tournaments.
