Last dance for Gianni? Infantino calls urgent council in Morocco

The position of the head of world football’s governing body is rapidly crumbling under the mounting pressure of a surging opposition.

Details: According to reliable sources, FIFA president Gianni Infantino is preparing for an emergency meeting in Morocco with the organization’s top-ranking officials. At present, Infantino is working intensively with national federations, urging them to back his re-election, with the Asian region emerging as the main battleground for political maneuvering.

However, the pressure on Infantino has reached a critical point. Earlier, the president of the Jordan Football Association, Prince Ali bin Al Hussein, publicly declared that FIFA’s methods of securing votes amounted to outright blackmail. The situation escalated further when even Infantino’s closest associates—FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström and head of football development Arsène Wenger—openly opposed Infantino’s new FIFA Forward Enterprise initiative.

Infantino has already lost the support of the Football Association of England and the Football Association of Wales, a withdrawal that dealt a major blow despite his previous confidence in securing more than 200 votes. Now, Infantino is left scrambling to see if he can retain the minimum 106 votes needed for decision-making.

Moreover, representatives from European federations are not just demanding Infantino’s removal, but are also pushing for sweeping reforms—abolishing the FIFA president role altogether and replacing it with a chairperson of a new governing committee equipped with a robust system of checks and balances.

It is worth noting that Gianni Infantino has led FIFA since February 2016, when he succeeded Joseph Blatter in the organization’s top job.
