“It's a great loss.” Nagelsmann - on Neuer's decision to end his international career
Germany's national team head coach Julian Nagelsmann commented on Manuel Neuer's decision to retire from international football.
"While I can understand Manu's decision and his reasons, his departure is a great loss — both in sporting terms and on a personal level. Manu shaped the goalkeeper position like no one else in the history of football. With his saves, style, game-building, and charisma, he was more than just the national team's goalkeeper for almost a decade and a half.
His abilities were a decisive factor in how we envisioned playing football. Manuel has been and remains a great athlete and a genuinely good person. I often sought conversations with him, and I'm glad I'll continue to be able to do so in the future. We will miss Manu in the national team," quotes the coach Bayern & Germany.
Manuel Neuer's last match for the German national team was the Euro 2024 quarterfinal, where Julian Nagelsmann's team lost 2-1 to Spain in the final minutes of extra time.
It is expected that after Neuer's departure, Marc-André ter Stegen will become Germany's first-choice goalkeeper.
It's also worth noting that experienced midfielder İlkay Gündoğan has recently retired from the German national team as well.
