‘Is he better than Maguire?’. Ex-coach of EPL clubs criticised de Ligt's transfer to Man United

The signing of Matthijs de Ligt marks a partial solution to Manchester United's centre-back problem, but some experts do not share the fans' enthusiasm in this matter.

For example, former Aston Villa and Tottenham head coach Tim Sherwood expressed doubts that de Ligt would be a quality boost to the Mancunians' defence:

‘If I was a Manchester United fan I wouldn't be jumping for joy. I'll be honest. When he was younger he was a really quality player. But he went to Bayern and he lost his class. He needs to find his rhythm again. We need to work hard with him.

Of course, because of the money they paid for him, he is expected to play. But there's no guarantee that for that kind of money he won't sit on the bench next to those who were paid the same money. There is no guarantee he will play.

Is he better for Harry Maguire? I'm not sure. He's certainly worse than Lisandro Martinez. But he definitely needs to play regularly and find himself,’ Sherwood told Sky Sports.
