Today marks the culmination of the quarterfinal matches in the 2023 Asian Cup.

In the first match, the national teams of Iran and Japan clashed. The representatives of the Land of the Rising Sun were considered favorites in this encounter, and of the tournament overall. They managed to quickly break the deadlock in the match, with Sporting midfielder Hidemasa Morita precisely finding the net with a strike in the 28th minute.

At halftime, the teams went, with Japan holding a narrow advantage. However, ten minutes into the second half, Iran's forward, Mohammad Mohebi equalized after a delivery from Roma's striker Sardar Azmoun.

In the second half, the Japanese enjoyed ball possession supremacy but registered half as many shots on target as their opponents (four compared to eight), only testing the Iranian goal once (compared to Iran's two shots on target). Consequently, the teams couldn't determine a winner in regular time. However, in extra time, Iran earned a penalty, confidently converted by Feyenoord's forward, Alireza Jahanbakhsh, securing the final score and guiding his team to the tournament's semifinals.
