In the early hours of Wednesday, July 10th, the first semifinal match of the Copa America took place between Argentina and Canada. The Albiceleste secured a convincing 2-0 victory.

One of the two goals was scored by captain Lionel Messi, which occurred in the 51st minute. This marked Leo's first goal in the current tournament, as he had not scored previously. Thus, Messi has now scored in six consecutive tournaments. He scored his first goal in the Copa America back in 2007.

Additionally, this goal against Canada was Messi's 109th for the national team, for which he has played since August 2005. Messi surpassed Iran's Ali Daei to claim second place in the historical rankings of top national team scorers. Ahead of him is only the absolute record holder, Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal, with 130 goals.

Notably, Messi's appearance in this tournament marks his 35th match in his Copa America career, an all-time record in the history of the tournament. The previous record was held by former Chilean goalkeeper Sergio Livingstone, who played 34 games in the Copa America between 1941 and 1953.
