In Spain, a team composed entirely of transgender players has played its first match
The general public may not typically show much interest in matches from the fifth division of the Spanish Championship, where competitions take place in regional leagues. However, one particular match has garnered significant attention.
Details: A unique team named FC Phoenix has entered the Catalonian regional league this season. What sets this team apart is that it is entirely composed of transgender players.
The players, born female but identifying as male, have fought for years to earn their right to compete alongside other men. And they have finally achieved this goal.
"I was a boy playing in a girls' team, but without a changed identity document, so I wasn't yet allowed to play with the boys.
Phoenix is a team of trans boys, created exclusively by trans boys, but I believe it’s something more—a family, a safe space where you can be free and express yourself the way you want and how you truly feel," shared 24-year-old FC Phoenix player Hugo Martínez.
However, FC Phoenix’s debut didn’t go as planned. In their first match, the team suffered a heavy 0:19 defeat. But for these players, the result is secondary to the bigger picture.
Reminder: At the recent Olympics, a controversy erupted around boxer Iman Khallif, who many believed to be a transgender man.
