On Thursday, 1 August, a high-profile and highly controversial event took place at the Olympic Games in Paris.
Italy's Angela Carini fought against gender reassignment fighter Imane Khelif of Algeria in the women's 66kg Olympic boxing tournament.
The fight lasted just 46 seconds before the Italian athlete was unable to continue. The Algerian transgender fighter landed a powerful punch on her opponent, after which Carini refused to fight any further.
"I was hurt like hell. I got a second punch to the nose, it hurt so much that I didn't want to continue," La Gazzetta dello Sport quoted Angela Carini as saying.
It's worth noting that Khelif, who changed her gender, was not allowed to compete at the last World Boxing Championships due to a failed gender test.
Another transgender athlete, also in boxing, is represented at this year's Olympics - Lin Yu Ting of Taiwan.
