"I'm surprised". Rooney speaks out on Tuchel's appointment to the England squad
The England national team has finally announced the permanent successor to Gareth Southgate, with Thomas Tuchel taking the role.
Former England and Manchester United star Wayne Rooney shared his thoughts on the FA’s decision.
Quote: "I'm surprised. He's a very good coach, but I'm surprised the FA hired him. I wish him all the best and hope he does well.
What the FA has built over the last 10–15 years has been a great platform for young coaches, so I'm surprised they didn't go with someone from within. But, as I said, they've made their decision, and I wish him the best. I hope he can handle all the challenges," Rooney said.
Reminder: Tuchel’s contract runs until the end of the 2026 World Cup, with an option to extend for another qualification cycle.
This will be Tuchel's first experience coaching a national team. His last role was at Bayern Munich, and before that, he managed Chelsea, PSG, and Borussia Dortmund.
After Gareth Southgate’s departure, England U-21 head coach Lee Carsley was the interim manager. Under his leadership, England secured nine points in four Nations League matches.
