I won't leave until you sign! Bayern boss reveals hilarious 3 AM standoff with Kompany
Bayern Munich's pursuit of Vincent Kompany involved an extraordinary late-night encounter! Sporting executive Max Eberl has revealed how he ended up lying on the Belgian's sofa at three in the morning, refusing to leave without securing his agreement.
Details: Speaking to Bayern's official members' magazine 51 on October 29, Eberl recalled travelling to Manchester with sporting director Christoph Freund in 2024. At 3 AM, Kompany said he wanted to sleep on the decision and consult his wife. Instead of leaving, Eberl lay down on the sofa. When the coach questioned his behaviour, Eberl joked that Uli Hoeneß had forbidden him from leaving without a signed agreement.
Kompany eventually agreed to accept the Bayern job, although he insisted on speaking with his wife first. Eberl laughed as he admitted that the Belgian ultimately managed to push him out of the house. The unusual encounter completed a recruitment process that had initially surprised many observers.
Bayern had been impressed by Kompany's attacking philosophy despite Burnley's relegation from the Premier League. Eberl also revealed that club officials consulted Pep Guardiola, who reportedly considered his former Manchester City captain a possible future successor. Guardiola's positive assessment strengthened Bayern's confidence.
It's worth noting that Kompany was appointed in the summer of 2024 and has since won two Bundesliga titles and the German Cup with Bayern. The story has emerged while the coach is recovering at home after his recent hospitalisation. What began as an unusual late-night negotiation has become one of the club's most successful coaching appointments.
Reminder: Finally some good news! Kompany released from hospital as Bayern reveal cause of frightening collapse.
