"I will not be like Putin or Maduro" - Joan Laporta says he will not run for Barcelona president for a third term

Joan Laporta's election campaign is gaining momentum.

Details: Today, the 63-year-old incumbent president of Catalan side Barcelona, running for his second term, Joan Laporta presented his vision for the club's development and answered journalists' questions.

One of the questions was whether Laporta plans to run for Barcelona president for a third time, to which he replied:

"I will not be like Putin or Maduro. I will not run for Barcelona president for a third time. Presidents can serve two consecutive terms, but no more. I could run again, but I do not plan to. That would be unacceptable." — Joan Laporta

In November 2020, Laporta announced his candidacy for the Barcelona presidential elections of 2021. In January 2021, he officially entered the race and on March 7 won the election, securing 54.28% of the vote. Previously, Laporta had already served as Barcelona president from 2003 to 2010.

The Barcelona presidential elections will take place in the spring of 2026.
