“I was so scared.” Rodri called yesterday's tackle against him one of the worst in his career
Manchester City midfielder Rodri had a stroke of luck to evade a serious injury during yesterday's triumph of his team against Fluminense with a score of 4-0 in the Club World Cup final in Jeddah. He fell, clutching his knee, and experienced intense pain as the team's medical staff rushed onto the field.
Though he returned to the game after receiving medical attention off the pitch, the impact from a tackle ultimately led to his substitution.
In an interview with Sky Sports, Rodri shared:
“Frankly, I was very fortunate today. I think it was one of the worst tackles I've experienced in my career. I was so frightened because I felt the pain in my knee, but thankfully, nothing serious happened. And I told the player, "You can't make such actions”.
But today, I won more than just a trophy. I'm going home in one piece. Yet, honestly, I was very close to tears because I was deeply concerned about what happened. But it's alright."
Rodri has been a pivotal player for Manchester City this season and was named the Man of the Match for his impressive performance against the Copa Libertadores winners. This marks City's fifth trophy this year, following victories in the Champions League and Super Cup in June and August respectively. Rodri joins Lionel Messi and Gareth Bale in the exclusive list of players named the best player in the UEFA Champions League final and winning the Club World Cup Golden Ball in the same year.
