‘I Still Find Hope’: Olympic cycling champion Chris Hoy opens up about his terminal cancer diagnosis
British cycling legend Chris Hoy delivered an inspiring speech during the SPOTY awards ceremony, sharing how he continues to find hope despite being diagnosed with terminal cancer.
In October 2023, Hoy revealed that he had been diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer and was given a prognosis of less than four years to live. Yet, the Scottish Olympian remains determined to maintain a positive outlook even in such challenging circumstances.
"I still find hope. It doesn't mean that the hope is that I'm going to survive this, because I'm not. But the hope was, and has come true, that I'm back to living again, back to enjoying each day - because none of us know what's coming in the future, we have today and that's it," said the six-time Olympic gold medalist in track cycling.
Chris Hoy is celebrated as one of Britain’s greatest Olympians. Over his illustrious career, the cyclist claimed six Olympic gold medals and 11 world championship titles. In recognition of his contributions to sport, he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2005.
