"I didn’t say I’m leaving". Guardiola says he has no plans to leave Manchester City yet
During his eight years at Manchester City, Pep Guardiola has become a legend for the team. Under his leadership, the club has won the Premier League six times, the FA Cup twice, and the League Cup four times. The Citizens have also secured victories in the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup.
However, Guardiola's contract with City is set to expire next year, and by the end of last season, there was increasing speculation that he might leave the club. The Spaniard responded briefly to these rumors:
"I am closer to leaving than staying here."
During the pre-season tour in the USA, Guardiola offered some hope to City fans, suggesting he might still remain with the team. At a press conference before the match against Milan, he said:
"When I leave, I will say I am leaving, but I didn’t say I’m leaving.
We will see what happens. But I do not completely rule out extending my contract. I would be happy to stay because I like it here," as reported by The Guardian.
Guardiola also clarified his earlier statements:
"I said that I have been at Manchester City for eight years. So I will not be here for another eight years. That is why I am closer to leaving than staying. But I did not say I am leaving!"
He added:
"Today, nine years at one club is an eternity. I want to make sure it is the right decision—not only for me but for the club and the players."
Currently, Guardiola is the most decorated manager in Manchester City's history. While he is not the longest-serving manager in terms of tenure, he ranks second in the number of matches at the helm of the club (471), trailing only Les McDowall, who managed 592 matches.
