“I believe this is wrong.” Former FIFA chief criticises Trump’s peace award
On Friday, 5 December, during the draw for the 2026 World Cup group stage, a peace award will be presented to US President Donald Trump. Such a gesture has not gone down well with the former head of FIFA.
Details: According to Joseph Blatter, presenting such an award is wrong, and it is football that should receive this kind of recognition — yet no one seems to think about that.
Quote: “They created their own peace award. I believe this is wrong. Football should receive such an award from an official organisation. But that idea never crosses the minds of those who run football. It’s a pity.
I can’t say Trump and Gianni Infantino cannot be good friends, but I don’t see any real interest in football. I view this as personal connections, especially with Trump.
I don’t know where the real World Cup trophy is now. It was always kept in Zurich under reliable protection before the tournament. Perhaps the trophy is already in the White House,” Blatter said.
The draw for the 2026 World Cup group stage will begin at 18:00 CET.
