The Swiss national team defeated Hungary 3-1 in the second match of the first round of Group A of Euro 2024.
The captain's armband in Hungary's squad was given to Dominik Szoboszlai today. This made the Liverpool midfielder the youngest captain in the history of the Euro final stages, as he is currently only 23 years old and was younger than many of his teammates: Gulacsi (34), Szalai (26), Orban (31), Lang (31), Varga (29).
However, this factor, as well as Szoboszlai's status as the main star of his team, did not help Hungary.
Switzerland's trump card was Englishman of Ghanaian origin Kwadwo Duah, who opened the scoring in the 12th minute. Before the half-time whistle, Michel Aebischer scored the second goal.
Hungary regained the intrigue in the middle of the second half, scoring one goal. However, the team failed to equalise. What's more, Switzerland scored again before the half-time whistle: Bril Embolo took advantage of a mistake by the opposing defence.
In the next round Hungary will play the hosts of Euro 2024, Germany, and Switzerland will face Scotland. In case of a second consecutive victory, the Swiss will clinch an early exit to the play-offs.
