How did he reach that?! Monfils produces another outrageous piece of magic at the US Open. VIDEO
Gael Monfils still knows how to turn defense into a show.
Details: Gael Monfils produced another spectacular moment during the US Open mixed doubles quarterfinal. In the middle of the rally, the ball appeared almost impossible to reach, but the Frenchman somehow managed to get his racket to it and send it back, once again showing the extraordinary athleticism that has made him one of tennis' greatest entertainers.
The moment came in the quarterfinal clash in New York, where Monfils partnered his wife Elina Svitolina against doubles specialists Katerina Siniakova and Henry Patten. The French-Ukrainian couple had reached this stage earlier in the day after cruising past Alexandra Eala and Felix Auger-Aliassime 4-1, 4-1.
Their quarterfinal opponents had already caused one of the biggest shocks of the competition. Siniakova and Patten eliminated the star pairing of Aryna Sabalenka and Novak Djokovic after losing the opening set, eventually winning 1-4, 4-2, 10-2.
For Monfils, however, spectacular rallies are nothing new. The Frenchman is playing the final ATP Tour season of his career and remains capable of producing the kind of defensive miracles that have delighted crowds for more than two decades. It is worth noting that Monfils has won 13 ATP singles titles and reached a career-high ranking of world No. 6 in November 2016.
