Wrexham co-owner Ryan Reynolds couldn't hold back his emotions after his team came agonizingly close to pulling off the biggest upset of the FA Cup season. In the fifth round clash, the Championship club went toe to toe with London giants Chelsea, only falling short in extra time with a 2-4 defeat.
Details: Right after the final whistle, Ryan Reynolds took to his social media to post a message that quickly went viral. The actor reminded everyone of the club's incredible journey under his stewardship:
"Exactly three years ago this week, we were fighting for a draw with Maidenhead United in the National League. And today, we pushed Chelsea into extra time. Incredibly proud of Wrexham's performance," wrote Reynolds.
The match at the Racecourse Ground turned into a real thriller. Wrexham twice took the lead thanks to goals from Sam Smith and Callum Doyle. However, late in regulation, the team was reduced to ten men after George Dobson was sent off. In extra time, Chelsea managed to break down the depleted hosts: Alejandro Garnacho put the Blues ahead, and João Pedro sealed the win in the dying seconds. Notably, VAR ruled out a Wrexham goal that could have sent the match to a penalty shootout.
It’s worth recalling that since Reynolds and Rob McElhenney bought the club in 2020, Wrexham has made a meteoric rise from the semi-professional ranks to the Championship and is now pushing for a spot in the Premier League.
Details: Chelsea winger Garnacho wants to stay at the club, but Chelsea is ready to sell him as early as next summer.
