Argentina booked their place in the 2026 World Cup quarter-finals after an incredible match against Egypt, which ended 3-2. Lionel Messi’s side were trailing 0-2 by the 79th minute, but mounted a stunning comeback in the closing stages.
Cristian Romero pulled one back after an assist from Messi, then Lionel himself leveled the score, before Enzo Fernandez netted the winner in the 93rd minute.
This goal was not only a match-winner for Argentina, but also a milestone for the entire history of the World Cup. FIFA confirmed that Fernandez’s strike was the 3,000th goal scored in tournament history.
Argentina now continues their quest in the quarter-finals, while Fernandez’s name is forever etched in World Cup history as the scorer of one of its most symbolic goals.
