The world of athletics has a new hero at the World Indoor Championships.

Details: South African hurdler Franco le Roux made a huge splash in the 60m hurdles, setting a new African record.

Le Roux literally "flew" down the track, clocking an incredible 7.50 seconds. Not only is this his new personal best, but it's also a historic achievement for the entire continent. Franco managed to surpass the "eternal" African continental record held by Shaun Bownes since way back in 2001.

The race was incredibly intense, with rivals breathing down the future record holder's neck the entire way. Spaniard Enrique Llopis crossed the line second in 7.55 seconds, while Frenchman Romain Lecour completed the podium with a 7.59 finish. But it was le Roux's powerful surge in the final meters that left his competitors behind and secured this historic time.

Reminder: Armand Duplantis set a new world record—his 15th career record.
