Details: According to Marca, citing journalist Martin del Palacio, FIFA president Gianni Infantino has promised the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) he’ll help the country leave CONCACAF and join CONMEBOL in return for their backing in the next FIFA presidential elections.
Del Palacio claims FMF’s support could be crucial for Infantino as he fights to stay in charge. In Mexico, the idea of joining CONMEBOL is viewed positively, but according to sources, the move hinges directly on whether the current FIFA boss holds onto his position.
For Mexican football, such a shift could bring major sporting benefits. The national team would regularly face Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Colombia, and other South American giants—an opportunity seen as a way to raise the overall standard of Mexican football.
Additionally, the FMF believes that taking part in CONMEBOL tournaments could significantly boost the team’s commercial value and help land more lucrative sponsorship deals.
The biggest obstacle remains logistics. Moving to the South American confederation would mean far longer flights for Mexican teams and additional headaches when it comes to scheduling.
