On August 12th in Salzburg, the UEFA Super Cup clash will see Champions League winners PSG face off against Europa League champions Aston Villa.

The showdown at “Stadion Salzburg” kicks off at 21:00 Central European Time. But this isn’t just a glamorous start to a new European season: these teams know each other inside out after delivering a true spectacle in the Champions League quarter-finals not long ago.

Back then, PSG edged Villa by an aggregate score of 5-4. The Parisians won the first leg at home 3-1, but in the return match, the English side nearly pulled off a stunning comeback — winning 3-2, though it wasn’t quite enough. Now, Unai Emery’s side has a golden opportunity to get revenge in a one-off battle and snatch a European trophy right away.

For PSG, the 2025/26 season has been nothing short of spectacular. The Parisians lifted the Champions League trophy for the second year running, and last August they already claimed the Super Cup — coming from 0-2 down to Tottenham in Udine, equalizing, and then winning on penalties. Now, Luis Enrique’s squad could become only the second in modern history to win the Super Cup two years in a row. The last team to do so was Real Madrid in 2016 and 2017.

However, PSG’s preseason preparations haven’t been flawless. They kicked off with a 0-3 defeat to Mallorca and are set for another friendly against Manchester United on August 8th. For Luis Enrique, it’s crucial to quickly get his players back to peak condition after a championship season, especially as several squad members only recently wrapped up World Cup duty.

There’s also a personnel question mark. As of August 8th, the participation of several key players remains in doubt. However, the official squad list includes Vitinha, João Neves, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Marquinhos, and Zabarnyi.

Aston Villa have been busy in the transfer market too. The squad has been noticeably refreshed, with João Gomes, Modou Keba Sissoko, and Alejandro Garnacho — the latter joining on loan from Chelsea. All three could potentially make their debut for the Birmingham club in this very match, though Garnacho’s fitness is still under question.

It’s shaping up to be a special night for Villa. In May, they won the Europa League, defeating Freiburg in the final in Istanbul, and now have a shot at the Super Cup for the first time since 1982. That year, Villa’s only previous Super Cup appearance, they beat Barcelona 3-1 on aggregate.

Emery knows full well that simply parking the bus and waiting for a chance against PSG is a dubious strategy. In the quarter-finals, Villa already showed they can cause the Parisians huge problems — especially when they play on the front foot. The current squad allows for quick counterattacks through Ollie Watkins, Emiliano Buendía, and Garnacho.

PSG, for their part, will surely look to boss possession and dictate play through Vitinha and João Neves. If Kvaratskhelia features up front, his individual skill could be a key to unlocking the English defense. Still, after their recent meetings, Villa know leaving space near the PSG penalty area is practically suicidal.
All in all, this is a blockbuster fixture: recent history, two European champions, and the chance to start the season with silverware. PSG are favorites, but Villa have already proven they can make life very difficult for the Parisians.

I’m expecting a fairly open game. Both sides love to attack, and memories of last year’s quarter-final add extra spice. PSG should have the edge thanks to superior individual quality and big-match experience — but don’t expect a walk in the park.

My prediction — both teams to score: yes.

Probable line-ups:

  • Paris Saint-Germain: Safonov, Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Mendes, Neves, Vitinha, Ruiz, Doué, Dembélé, Kvaratskhelia.
  • Aston Villa: Martínez, Cash, Konsa, Torres, Maatsen, Kamara, Gomes, McGinn, Buendía, Garnacho, Watkins.
