Here we go! Liverpool unexpectedly secures Araujo on loan from Barcelona
The summer’s most unexpected bombshell.
Details: Fabrizio Romano exclusive: Liverpool has reached an agreement with Barcelona to sign Ronald Araujo on loan. The verbal agreement between the clubs has already been greenlit by Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco. The 27-year-old Uruguayan centre-back is set to become the Reds’ newest signing.
This is a logical move for Liverpool: after Ibrahima Konaté’s departure as a free agent, Andoni Iraola was desperate for an experienced centre-back, and Araujo fit the bill perfectly. Meanwhile, Araujo had lost his starting spot in Barcelona, endured a tough season, took a career break for mental health reasons at the end of 2025, and fell down the pecking order under Hansi Flick—making his exit from Camp Nou only a matter of time. The Uruguay national team captain made 200 appearances for the Blaugrana.
Just a couple of years ago, Araujo was considered untouchable, with his Barcelona contract running until 2031 and a €1 billion release clause. Now, he’s being allowed to leave on loan.
Reminder: Catalans are no longer expecting anyone! Barcelona puts an end to the summer transfer window
