Here he stays! Romano confirms Juventus winger is about to sign a new contract
From transfer-list casualty to cornerstone of the project. The summer's unwanted man at Juventus is now hours away from committing his future to Turin.
Details: According to Fabrizio Romano, Juventus have reached a verbal agreement with the camp of Nicolás González over a new contract, and the 28-year-old Argentine winger will sign in the coming days. The decision marks a remarkable U-turn: Juventus spent much of the summer trying to move him on, and González himself was desperate to return to Atlético Madrid and Diego Simeone after last season's loan spell, pushing for the move until deadline day. Atlético declined to trigger their €30 million purchase option, the two clubs never found a permanent solution, and with other proposals also falling through, the Bianconeri kept the player. González responded by knuckling down under Luciano Spalletti, and his performances forced the club's hand. His current deal runs until June 2029 on a net salary of €3.6 million per season, and Italian reports suggest the renewal will stretch towards 2031 with a pay rise.
The reversal is one of the season's most striking stories. In August, González was so determined to leave that Inter Milan circled in case he forced an exit, and Juventus were open to selling him, having already loaned him out after an underwhelming first season. Everything changed once the campaign began. Thrown into a depleted side missing Kenan Yıldız, Khephren Thuram and Manuel Locatelli to injury, the former Fiorentina and Stuttgart man produced an instant response, scoring the opener against Parma and impressing in a longer stint against AC Milan, proving he can operate anywhere across the front line as a winger, second striker or attacking midfielder. Spalletti's public backing and the affection of his teammates did the rest: La Stampa reported in September that the player, feeling valued again, had opened the door to an extension, and Romano has now confirmed the agreement is in place.
It's worth noting that Juventus originally signed González for around €36 million from Fiorentina in 2024, and a renewal also serves the club's accounting interests by spreading the amortisation of that fee. For Spalletti, the news arrives at the perfect moment: Juventus resume their campaign on October 18 at home to Lazio in the derby, with the Champions League trip to Celta Vigo following days later, and having a motivated, versatile attacker locked down long-term is a far better prospect than the summer's plan of shipping him to Madrid. González wanted Simeone's project; in the end, Turin convinced him it was his own.
Reminder: Forever in the history of the Bianconeri! Cristiano Ronaldo will enter the Juventus Hall of Fame.
