Heartbreaking moment: Glenn Hoddle reveals the match that triggered his heart problems
Former England manager Glenn Hoddle has shared the dramatic moment when his heart problems first began, recounting a tense World Cup qualifier between Italy and England in Rome in 1997, reports The Sun.
As the match neared its final seconds, England were on the brink of qualifying for the 1998 World Cup when Italian striker Christian Vieri came close to scoring a goal that would have denied them the spot. It was during this heart-stopping moment that Hoddle felt his heart race and then suddenly pound, followed by a severe sweating episode.
"To this day that is the moment where I think I had a heart problem and I didn't know anything about it," Hoddle reflected in a later interview.
It was just over two decades later, in October 2018, that Hoddle experienced a cardiac arrest while working as a pundit on a BT Sport show. Quick-thinking by the show's sound engineer, Simon Daniels, who administered life-saving CPR, helped save Hoddle’s life. He was later rushed to the hospital, where he underwent heart surgery and was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation.
