Hamilton calls for Formula 1 to return to Africa
Lewis Hamilton asserts that Formula 1 can no longer "ignore" Africa and revealed that he has been in talks with those aiming to host a Grand Prix in Rwanda.
In an exclusive interview with Motorsport.com, it was reported that Formula 1 management is planning to hold discussions with Rwandan representatives in September, continuing their efforts to organize a race in this East African country.
Although the current calendar already features a record-breaking 24 races, there could be additional rounds in the future, as numerous potential venues are eager to participate in the growing interest in the sport.
Since the last South African Grand Prix in 1993, there hasn't been a single Formula 1 race held on the African continent. Hamilton believes it's time to bring the series back to Africa.
"Africa is being given nothing. There's a huge amount of work that needs to be done there. Many people who have never been to Africa don't understand how beautiful and vast it is.
I believe that hosting a Grand Prix in Africa could really showcase the beauty of the continent, attract tourism, and much more. Why aren't we on this continent yet? The current excuse is that there isn't a ready-made track, but there is at least one that already exists."
Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali told Motorsport.com that a meeting with Rwanda has already been scheduled to discuss this project, which he described as having promising prospects.
