Manchester City faced Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League playoff round. The 3-1 defeat not only ended their European campaign but also marked an unwanted milestone for Pep Guardiola.
Details: According to Opta, this was Guardiola’s 13th loss of the season, the highest number of defeats he has ever suffered in a single campaign. The Spanish manager had never previously endured this many losses over the course of a season, making it a personal low point in his career.
Additionally, for the first time as a coach, Guardiola failed to guide his team to the UEFA Champions League round of 16.
Notably, Kylian Mbappé became just the fourth player in Real Madrid’s history to score 3+ goals in the first round of the UEFA Champions League knockout stage. He also found the net against Manchester City in the first leg. The only other players to achieve this feat for Los Blancos were Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, and Brazilian Ronaldo.
