Veljko Paunovic may be heading back to Europe after parting ways with Tigres. According to RTVE Asturias, Grupo Pachuca is in advanced talks with the Serbian coach to take over at Real Oviedo, a club under their ownership in Spain’s second division.

Oviedo recently sacked head coach Javi Calleja after a poor run of results, opening the door for Paunovic’s return. Notably, he played for Oviedo on loan from Atlético Madrid in the early 2000s, giving the club familiarity with his profile and work ethic.

Although Paunovic did not win titles in Mexico, he led Chivas to the Clausura 2023 final—ironically losing to Tigres. Since his dismissal, he remained in Monterrey awaiting a new opportunity, one that now seems to have arrived in the form of a potential promotion push with Oviedo.

Currently sixth in LaLiga Hypermotion, Real Oviedo aims to regain the momentum that once placed them near the top of the table. Paunovic would face the challenge of reviving their form during the critical final stretch of the season.
