Diego Maradona remains an iconic figure in world football.
Details: Today it was revealed that the legendary Barcelona shirt worn by Diego Maradona was sold at auction for $152,000.
This jersey was on Maradona during the 1984 Copa del Rey final between Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao. It became particularly famous because, during the match, Diego tore the shirt, but played on until the final whistle.
Barcelona lost that final 0-1, but little did Diego know he was wearing what would become the world’s most expensive club jersey.
According to Matchday Football Auctions, the $152,000 fetched—after taxes and fees—sets a new record for the highest sum ever paid for a club football shirt.
Maradona played for Barcelona from 1982 to 1984, making 58 appearances for the Blaugrana, scoring 38 goals and providing 23 assists.
The legendary Maradona also played for clubs such as Boca Juniors, Sevilla, and Napoli.
