Good news for Kaizer Chiefs! Fernando da Cruz recovers after worrying health scare
Fernando da Cruz can breathe easier after a worrying post-match episode.
Details: Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando da Cruz has fully recovered after falling ill following Tuesday's 1-1 Betway Premiership draw against Stellenbosch at FNB Stadium. Shortly after the final whistle, the Frenchman began feeling unwell and vomited, forcing him to miss his usual post-match media duties. Assistant coach Dillon Sheppard subsequently explained that doctors were checking on the head coach to make sure he was okay.
The latest update, however, is encouraging. Da Cruz attended the Carling Knockout last-16 draw on Wednesday night, where his interpreter and fitness assistant Julien Le Heran confirmed that the coach was feeling very well. He explained that the vomiting occurred only after the match and that Da Cruz had since recovered.
Da Cruz was therefore able to return to his duties as Kaizer Chiefs learned their next Carling Knockout opponents. Amakhosi were paired with TS Galaxy, and the coach described the competition as another opportunity for his team to fight for silverware this season.
The health scare came after Chiefs had to come from behind against Stellenbosch. Sinoxolo Kwayiba put the visitors ahead before Mduduzi Shabalala equalised to secure a 1-1 draw. The result extended Kaizer Chiefs' unbeaten start in the Betway Premiership to eight matches, with three wins and five draws. It is worth noting that Da Cruz was appointed Kaizer Chiefs head coach in June 2026 on a two-year contract with an option for an additional year.
