Golden Arrows midfielder Velemseni Ndwandwe on their win against Stellenbosch FC in the Nedbank Cup: I feel for Stellenbosch's penalty cry in our game
Velemseni Ndwandwe feels for Stellenbosch FC after they beat 1-0 in the Nedbank Cup last-16 match last Saturday.
Ndwandwe’s Golden Arrows beat the Cape Winelands club by an odd goal and somewhat profited from an error by referee Michael Mosemeng, who denied Stellies a clear penalty call.
Ayanda Jiyane handled the ball inside the 18-yard box in what was a clear penalty but the referee waved play on.
Arrows went on to score via an Angelo Van Rooi goal to seal their place in the quarterfinals of the Ke Yona competition, where they will place Durban City.
“For me, I think everyone makes mistakes. Even as a father at home, you can make mistakes that get picked up by the kids. At the end of the day, the match officials are also human beings. As everyone keeps saying, we need VAR because the game has become very fast. Until we get VAR, we can always point out mistakes and question why certain decisions were not overturned,” said Ndwandwe, speaking to journalists after the quarterfinal draw.
“We have also suffered from refereeing mistakes in many games, but that doesn’t mean we are happy that it happened to Stellenbosch this time around, because tomorrow it could be us. We feel for Stellenbosch because it’s not nice to perform well in a game only for decisions to go against you. A penalty can change the complexion of a match, if we’re being honest. And as much as we would like to win the cup, we would want to do so in the right way,” he said.
