Haaland has turned Rooney's risky statement into the perfect piece of pre-quarter-final banter at the World Cup.

Details: Ahead of the Norway vs England clash, Erling Haaland publicly addressed Wayne Rooney and reminded him of his bold pledge. Earlier, the former England captain had claimed he would row across the Mersey if Norway reached the World Cup quarter-finals.

Haaland didn't miss the chance to poke fun at the English legend:

"Looking forward to seeing you, Wayney! Wayne Rooney said he'd take up rowing if we reached the World Cup quarter-finals. So I'm expecting you to go for that rowing trip!" the Norwegian striker declared.

Rooney caught Haaland's message live on BBC and, with a smile, admitted his mistake:

"Yeah… I won't be making statements like that again."

But the former Manchester United forward isn't backing out of his promise. Rooney revealed he plans to go rowing together with BBC pundits Micah Richards and Joe Hart. However, instead of the Mersey, the crew might end up on the Hudson River.

It's worth noting that Haaland has netted seven goals in four World Cup matches, helping Norway reach this stage of the tournament for the first time in history.

Reminder: Kane definitely didn't expect this! What was he doing with Trump?
