Germany leader considers the defeat of the national team and their exit from Euro 2024 to be unfair
Germany's national team leader Joshua Kimmich considers the team's 1:2 defeat to Spain and their exit from the home Euro 2024 to be unfair.
"Unfortunately, it was very unfair. We were much better in the second half and extra time. The Spaniards just wanted to save themselves by going to penalties. We had two really good chances after the conceded goal, and we should have been awarded a penalty for handball. This is definitely a completely different disappointment compared to what happened in Qatar.
We weren't a team there. This time, it was completely different. The last six weeks have been very special; we had great team spirit. I haven't often encountered this. That's why the disappointment is even greater than at other tournaments. There, we didn't deserve more, but today it was completely different. We were definitely the better team against a very good Spain. I also believe that our task is to give people in Germany something they can be proud of," Kimmich said after the match.
With their elimination, the German team continued a sad tradition: for 40 years, host countries have not been able to win the Euros.
The last time a host country became the strongest on the continent was in 1984, when France's national team won.
