The friendly match between the England and Brazil national teams at Wembley yesterday ended with the first defeat for the Three Lions in fifteen months. The last time the English team suffered a loss was in the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup, when they were eliminated by France.

Despite the loss and the interruption of their ten-match unbeaten streak, England's head coach Gareth Southgate remained pleased with his team.

"I was pleased. Of course, I don't like losing football matches, but I think there were a lot of good individual performances from players who have hardly played for the England team before.

I think our more established players were very good.

You know, with 15 minutes to go, we're thinking: 'We've seen a lot of new players, we've had more possession than we usually do, we've had as many shots as they have.' In the end, it was just one moment that made the difference, and that's the ruthlessness of football at this level."

Three players made their debut for the national team yesterday. Anthony Gordon started the match, Ezri Konsa came on in the 20th minute due to Kyle Walker's injury, and Cobbie Mainoo replaced Conor Gallagher towards the end of the game. Southgate was pleased with all the debutants.

"I think Anthony was very good. Both sides of his game looked very successful.

Ezri, coming on at that moment and dealing with a player of Vinicius Junior's level, I think was excellent too. He showed real composure and should be very pleased with his debut. We were very happy with him.

Cobi had his chance. We needed to change part of the team because we need to manage their playing time a bit. Cobi coming on was a brilliant moment for him and his family. You saw a couple of turns and a couple of really composed moments, which is a kind of indication of what he can become."

It's worth noting that the match ended with a narrow 1-0 victory for the Brazil national team.
