Frustration for Spain: striker Samu Agehova to miss World Cup 2026 due to serious injury
Porto and Spain national team striker Samu Agehova is sidelined for the rest of the season and will miss the upcoming World Cup after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. The injury occurred on Monday during the marquee Primeira Liga clash against Sporting, when the 21-year-old forward was forced off at halftime.
Details: According to The Athletic, medical examinations confirmed the worst fears: recovery from such an injury typically takes between five months and a year. This means Porto will have to finish their title race and Europa League playoff campaign without their top scorer.
Agehova, who debuted for La Roja in November 2024, was seen as a powerful alternative to Spain’s more technical forwards and had quickly become a key part of the rotation in the qualification campaign. Now, the Spanish coaching staff will have to urgently reconsider their list of candidates for the trip to the USA, Mexico, and Canada, weighing more experienced options like Álvaro Morata and Mikel Oyarzabal.
It’s worth noting that Agehova has been in phenomenal form this season, netting 20 goals in 32 appearances for the Portuguese club across all competitions.
Reminder: Spain winger Lamine Yamal revealed his secret to coping with fan pressure.
